The first episode A promise tells the story of how Dr. Karbaat became the most renowned fertility doctor in the Netherlands. Former patients, mothers of “Karbaat” children, discuss their longstanding wish for a child, and how it made them close their eyes to an often-horrific and unbearable insemination treatment.
The second episode Offspring shows how the Karbaat children deal with the genetic and emotional heritage once the news was out, debating and weighing the impact of nature and nurture. The children share their inner conflicts, on the one side feeling recognition and belonging, while on the other also fear of inheriting malicious genetic traits.
The third episode Liquid love introduces Dr. Karbaat’s favorite sperm donor, who yearned for immortality by producing over 200 donor children. More and more cases of doctors inseminating their own semen have come and still come to light, making it a more prevalent event than one may have thought.
